Why Door Installation Should Be Performed By Experts

Many home improvement projects are good candidates for homeowners to do themselves. Picture frames and caulking, for example, are easy enough to learn with a quick online video and some practice.

Other home improvement projects are a different story, however. Whether they’re more difficult than you think or involve more expertise than you have, it’s best to leave these to the experts. Door installations are one of these areas. Here’s why door installation should be performed by experts.

    Save Time and Frustration

First off, door installation professionals typically install hundreds of doors a week. As such, they know tips, tricks and techniques that speed up and improve the efficiency of the door installation. What you might learn through trial and error the professional has already learned over the years. Plus, the time they take to complete the installation will simply be less than the time you take, so that’s a benefit in itself.

    Remove Old Door Properly

If you replace a door yourself, you have to get rid of the old door. With a door installation, the installer will typically remove the old door and hardware (sometimes for a fee and sometimes not). If anything, ask the door installation expert you’re considering whether they will remove the old door, as this may help in your decision to hire out the project or do it yourself.

Get It Right the First Time

There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of a project and realizing you did something wrong during the first step. Not only do you have to repeat the door install steps, you have the new project of undoing your earlier work. This is a mistake that typically only happens once or twice, which is why you can trust an expert to get it right the first time.

    Avoid Unwanted Expenses

Perhaps the main reason why door installation should be performed by experts is to help you avoid unwanted expenses. Not only do you risk wasting time, you risk wasting money due to damaged frames or hinges, broken windows, wrong parts and any other peripheral wear or damage. Hiring a professional may come with an expense, but the benefits far outweigh the risks of attempting it yourself.

  • How to Paint Exterior Doors

    How to Paint Exterior Doors

Because your exterior door will often be one of the first things that people notice when they look at your house, it’s important to keep it in good shape. If you have an exterior door that is old and fading, painting it is a great way to bring it back to life. Those who aren’t quite sure how to paint a front door can follow these simple steps:

    • Remove the door and set it down on a clean, flat surface that’s covered with newspaper, a drop cloth, or some other kind of protection.
    • Take off the doorknob and any other hardware such as locks and door knockers, and then place painter’s tape around the edges of any glass on the door so you won’t get paint on it.
    • Scrub the surface of the door with a wet sponge to clean it off, let it dry, and then lightly sand the door to remove any remaining dirt or rough spots.
    • Apply a primer to the door, let it dry, and then apply a coat of paint. Let the paint dry and then flip the door over to repeat all the steps over again.
    • Hang the door back into its place and reattach the hardware.

  • What Is the Best and Safest Front Door Material

What Is the Best and Safest Front Door Material

Choosing a new front door for your home may seem straightforward – you just need to find something that looks good, right? Well, yes and no. Of course, you want any door you buy to give your house a strong curbside appeal. But there are other factors that are important as well. Most importantly, you want a door that will provide security so your family can relax knowing they are safe from any potential predators wanting to break in. Here are 3 important factors to help you decide the best material for your front door.

    Security

The safety and security of your home should be at the top of the list when you are deciding what the best front door material is for your home. While other factors are important, they pale in comparison to the need to keep your family safe.

While there are a number of door materials you can choose from, like wood, aluminum, and fiberglass, without a doubt, the safest front door material is heavy-duty steel. And, even though steel doors are the strongest and have a number of other benefits, they are also the least expensive type of door as well.

Steel doors have an internal frame that is either made from wood or steel to give them greater strength, with foam insulation filling the unused inner space. Because steel is so strong, these doors will hold up, no matter how much they are beaten, rammed, or abused.

Anyone trying to break into your home will find themselves in a losing battle if they try to break through one of these doors! And, because of the way they are constructed, steel doors also have other benefits for your home such as long-life durability and increased energy efficiency.

    Durability

When looking at all the front door material options, durability and security go hand in hand. The stronger and more durable a door is, the harder it will be for someone to break through it. But durability isn’t just about being able to take a beating.

Through years of wear and tear, even a strong door can begin to show signs of abuse. Steel is, again, a great option when looking for a durable door. While they can be prone to denting, they don’t chip like wooden doors can, and any dents and dings can be pulled out and fixed with a car repair kit.

However, if you’re looking for the material that will last the longest with the least maintenance required, the answer is fiberglass. This material is designed to not dent, chip, or rot and will last for years in all kinds of weather. And, when it’s properly installed in a strong frame, it can be nearly as secure as a steel door.

While fiberglass is more expensive than steel, if you’re looking to install the best all-around door that will provide security, energy efficiency, and long-term durability, fiberglass is a great way to go.

    Energy Efficiency

Another major factor in choosing front door materials is how energy efficient they are. Again, fiberglass wins in this category. After all, it’s a man-made material designed with energy use in mind.

All fiberglass doors have a thick layer of foam inside to protect your house from the elements and insulate your home for maximum energy efficiency. This can be true of steel doors as well, but there is more variability with steel, with some doors having efficient foams filling them, and others left empty besides the internal frame. Steel also naturally conducts heat more, making it less energy efficient. For a natural insulator, wooden doors are also a great choice. However, you need to choose a good hardwood option to get the most energy benefit out of a wooden door.

Because manufacturers work so hard to develop new ways to improve energy efficiency today, all three of these door materials can make a good door for saving you money on your power bill. Choosing between them will really come down to deciding what your particular needs are, and which material will do the best job at meeting all of them.

    How to Decide

With so many factors that go into which material will be the best for your front door , it can be hard to decide which one to choose. The best option is to have a professional who can help walk you through the process and figure out exactly what you need. That’s why Expo Home Improvement is here to give you the guidance and support you need to buy and install the perfect door for your home.

  • Important Differences Between Entry Doors and Security Doors

Important Differences Between Entry Doors and Security Doors

Entry doors and security doors are two of the most popular types of front door options on the market. If you are considering replacing the exterior front doors of your home, you might be curious about the differences between standard entry doors and security doors. In general, security doors are equipped with additional features and upgraded materials for enhanced safety and protection. Let’s discuss the specific differences between entry doors and security doors.

    Materials

The materials used to construct each type of door is one of the major differences between entry doors and security doors. Entry doors are often made from wood, fiberglass, or lightweight aluminum. While these are certainly strong materials that will restrict access to your home, security doors are made with ultra strong materials including steel and reinforced aluminum.

    Functionality

While both entry doors and security doors serve the same general purpose, they do differ somewhat in their function. An entry door is designed with visual appeal and general weather protection and access protection in mind, while security doors are designed to provide enhanced protection against unwanted intruders and forced entry.

    Locking Mechanisms

As you can imagine, the locking mechanisms of a standard entry door and a security door differ somewhat. Entry doors are usually equipped with standard deadbolts and regular latches while security doors usually have more advanced locking mechanisms including multi-point locking systems, state-of-the-art deadbolts, and more.

    Additional Features

Beyond the items mentioned above, it is also important to note that security doors often come equipped with additional safety and security features designed to provide extra peace of mind for homeowners. Some of the features that you might expect to see in a security door include:

    • Tempered or Reinforced Glass
    • Extra Weatherproofing
    • Reinforced Door Frames or Hinges
    • Deadbolts
    • Built-In Security Systems or Alarms
